Community Group Targets Energy Waste to Spur Rural Economy
Published: 0000-00-00
Launch of Drombane/Upperchurch Energy Survey Report this Froday 8pm, October 21st 2011 in Drombane Hall

One of the first comprehensive energy surveys of a rural community in Ireland, has found that a parish of 1200 people spends over €1million/year to heat and power homes.

Marking the significance of this volunteer initiative, the Energy Survey Report will be launched in Drombane Hall by Professor Owen Lewis, the Chief Executive of Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), on Friday, Oct 21st. The report will give people of Drombane/Upperchurch a clear idea of the energy use and insulation levels in their homes. This, organisers hope, will spur parishioners to secure SEAI grants, invest in energy conservation, saving themselves money, while at the same time boosting income & employment opportunities for this small rural community of 1200 people in mid-Tipperary.

Among the significant findings of the Report, 30 households in Drombane/Upperchurch have no insulation in their homes at all, while a significant portion of houses were built before 1920. However, nearly 82% of houses can qualify for SEAI grants, while 13% qualify for the Warmer Homes Scheme grant.

The house to house survey, which had a response rate of 87%, was carried out during the summer by a team of volunteers, with the help of a mapping system used by the local GAA club. The combined voluntary effort have been the equivalent of employing a full time community worker for over 8 months.

Since early 2010, the community has been assisted by North Tipperary LEADER Partnership Community Development Worker, Gearóid Fitzgibbon: “In an age of energy scarcity, financial instability and recession, it’s fantastic to see a community trying to come up with its own answers. This project began with the question: “What can we do to get something going in our community?” 12 months of community planning and action, and this Energy Report are part of trying to answer that question.
According to local organiser Con Harrington: “Small communities like ours must take a self-help approach, and not wait on state initiatives. Local people know what is best for their locality, If they take the first steps, state agencies will come on stream.”

Seamus Hoyne, Manager of Tipperary Energy Agency, one of the key partners on the project, added: “In the current climate, money spent on conserving energy offers one of the best returns on investment, through long term savings made.”

More Information
Drombane/Upperchurch Energy Project was initiated in 2011 by Drombane Village Group, who sought to stimulate economic activity within their small rural community in mid-Tipperary, Following a number of community planning sessions facilitated by North Tipperary LEADER Partnership, energy was identified as an economic opportunity for the area.

Discussions were held with Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) Tipperary, the Tipperary Energy Agency, which examined a number of options, including energy generation, the development of wood heating projects, district heating opportunities, and investment in energy efficiency. With the advice of Tipperary Energy Agency, the group decided initially to concentrate on energy conservation and efficiency. As a first step, the newly formed Energy Team decided to carry out a local community energy survey.

At the LAUNCH (8-9pm), Ms. Julie Curtin, LIT-Tipperary student who drafted and compiled the report, will formally present its findings. There will be brief contributions from North Tipperary LEADER Partnership and Tipperary Energy Agency, before the concluding remarks by Professor Lewis of Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. The report will be available afterwards for download on www.upperchurch.ie and www.ntlp.ie People can also follow on “Drombane/Upperchurch Energy Team” facebook page: see: http://on.fb.me/drombanenrg

Before the LAUNCH in Drombane Hall, there will be an INFORMATION & ADVICE CLINIC (5-8pm), where staff from Tipperary Energy Agency, will give householders confidential feedback one-to-one on their individual surveys. Householders will also be able to browse information stands of certified energy/retrofit companies and talk to qualified BER assessors.

* Similar work has been done in the towns of Clonakilty and Kinsale.
